Public Work

Welcome to the Public Works Department Web site.

 
This will help you with some of the information that you will need as far as contact numbers and where to report problems. The Superintendent monitors all projects being done by Public Works Department.
 
Public Works has 19 full-time employees that also includes 2 Clerks and a working Foreman. The Public Works Department is responsible for water distribution and water sampling, maintenance of village streets, snow removal from streets, traffic control signs and street signs, village street lights, maintenance of public sidewalks, maintenance of the village fleet, buildings and grounds.
 
The garbage service is picked up by Homewood Disposal 708-798-1004. The Public Works Department hours are Monday thru Friday 7am to 3:30 pm 708-201-3280. For any issues after hours, please call the Dispatch Center at 708-201-3240.   If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact the Public Works Office.
 

Tree and Shrub Maintenance Responsibilities

Property owners are responsible for maintaining trees, shrubs, bushes, and other plantings located on their property when they affect sidewalks, streets, driveways, intersections, or other public areas.

Property Owner Responsibilities

Trees and shrubs must be trimmed when they:

  • Overhang a sidewalk, street, or other public place
  • Interfere with pedestrian or vehicle travel
  • Obstruct visibility at an intersection or driveway
  • Create a hazard to pedestrians, motorists, or public safety

Plantings that obstruct visibility must be trimmed and kept trimmed to eliminate the hazard or removed when necessary.

Notice and Village Action

When an obstruction or hazardous limb is identified, the property owner may receive notice by registered mail. If the condition is not corrected within 10 days, the Building Commissioner may authorize the necessary work to remove the obstruction or public-safety hazard.

The property owner may be billed for the expenses incurred by the Village.

Utility Poles and Wires

Companies authorized to maintain poles and wires within Village streets, alleys, or other public places are responsible for keeping those facilities clear of trees and shrubs whenever possible. Any trimming performed is subject to the supervision of the Building Commissioner.

Penalties

A violation of these requirements may result in a fine of not less than $50 and not more than $500 per offense, in addition to any expenses charged for corrective work completed by the Village.

Questions for Garbage and Yard Waste Pick-Up please call Public Works and we can contact Homewood Disposal. Please remember to put your garbage, yard waste bags and your branches ( cut and tied up in 4ft length ) out the night before pick-up starting at 7pm.
